Private LLM hosting vs Vast.ai

We rent DGX Sparks, so weigh that against everything below. Vast.ai is a peer-to-peer marketplace: individuals and businesses list spare or dedicated GPU hardware, Vast.ai handles discovery, billing, and a reliability scoring layer, and you rent whichever listing fits your budget and specs. That structure is what makes it cheap, and it's also the thing to understand clearly before you put anything sensitive on it.

Side by side

Vast.aiDedicated DGX Spark (GPUwerk)
Who owns the hardware The individual or business host who listed it. Vast.ai operates the marketplace and billing layer, not the physical machines. GPUwerk. We own and operate the DGX Spark your instance runs on.
Where data is processed Wherever the specific host's machine is located. Listings span many countries; you filter by location per rental. EU-Central (Prague), on one dedicated machine, no per-session filtering needed.
Who can access your instance Governed by Vast.ai's terms and each host's own agreement. The physical host has some level of access to their own hardware by nature of owning it; review Vast.ai's current terms for the specifics. Nobody at GPUwerk. Our DPA states GPUwerk hosts the machine but does not access, read, copy, index, or analyse the content of the controller's instance.
Reliability Varies by host. Vast.ai publishes reliability scores and verification badges so you can filter for more dependable listings, but quality is not uniform across the marketplace. One operator, one published uptime commitment, one machine you can reach the same way every session.
Hardware A wide range, from consumer and prosumer GPUs up to data-center parts, depending on the listing. Check individual listings for exact specs and VRAM. NVIDIA DGX Spark: Grace Blackwell, 128GB unified memory, consistent spec on every instance.
Pricing model Per-GPU-hour, set by each host and often influenced by real-time supply and demand or auction-style bidding on some listing types. Check current listings for a number. One flat hourly rate: $0.79/hour on-demand, $0.59/hour held, no bidding, no per-listing shopping. Per pricing.
Contracts and DPA Vast.ai's own marketplace terms, plus whatever the individual host's listing terms specify. A standard GDPR Article 28 DPA published free at /legal/dpa, no negotiation required.

The worked cost example

An always-on internal endpoint for a month on a Spark: 730 hours × $0.79/hour = $576.70, before tax, fixed regardless of which model you run or how many requests it serves. Per pricing.

Vast.ai listings can undercut that on raw hourly price, sometimes considerably, since individual hosts set their own rates and competition among listings pushes prices down. The number you'd actually pay depends entirely on which listing you pick, its GPU, its reliability score, and current marketplace conditions, so there's no single Vast.ai figure to put next to $576.70 here; check current listings for your GPU class. What that lower sticker price doesn't include: the time spent evaluating listings, the risk that a specific host goes offline or delists mid-project, and, for many listings, consumer-grade hardware without the vendor support and unified-memory architecture a DGX Spark ships with.

Migration path

Open-weight model files move freely between a Vast.ai instance and a Spark, it's the same kind of container-and-checkpoint workflow either way. What doesn't transfer is any dependency on a specific host's hardware quirks or a workflow built around bidding for capacity; a Spark removes that variable by being the same fixed machine every time.

FAQ

Who actually owns the machine when I rent on Vast.ai?

An individual or business host who listed their own hardware on Vast.ai's marketplace, not Vast.ai itself. Vast.ai operates the marketplace, billing, and a reliability/verification layer on top, but the physical machine and its network are controlled by whoever owns it. A GPUwerk Spark is on hardware GPUwerk owns and operates directly.

Is Vast.ai suitable for production workloads?

It can be, and many users run production inference on it, but because hosts are independent third parties, reliability, uptime, and network quality vary by listing. Vast.ai publishes host reliability scores and lets you filter for verified or higher-reliability hosts to manage this. A dedicated Spark removes the variable entirely: one operator, one machine, one published uptime commitment.

Is my data private on a Vast.ai instance?

Your container is isolated from other renters, but the host who owns the physical machine has some level of access to the hardware your workload runs on, since it's their box. Vast.ai's own terms and host agreements govern the specifics; review those directly. On a GPUwerk Spark, GPUwerk owns the hardware and our DPA states GPUwerk does not access, read, copy, index, or analyse the content of your instance.

Is Vast.ai cheaper than a dedicated Spark?

Often, for raw GPU-hour price, since the marketplace model lets individual hosts undercut managed cloud pricing. Vast.ai's rates vary by listing, GPU model, and current supply and demand, so check current listings for a real number. What you're trading for a lower price is host variability and, for many listings, a consumer or prosumer GPU rather than data-center-class hardware with vendor support.

Does Vast.ai have EU hosts?

Vast.ai's marketplace includes hosts in many countries including several in the EU, but which specific machines and locations are available changes constantly since anyone can list or delist hardware. You'd need to filter listings by location yourself for each session. A GPUwerk Spark is fixed in EU-Central, Prague, with no listing-by-listing search required.

GPUwerk's own figures on this page ($0.79/hour, $0.59/hour, $576.70/month) come from our published pricing. Vast.ai does not publish a single fixed rate, prices are set per listing by individual hosts and shift with marketplace conditions, so check current Vast.ai listings directly rather than relying on a figure here.
